Plates Cafe & Catering Opens: Sweet Charity Pie

Don’t-want-to-know-how-many-calories lunches make you feel guilty? What if the money was going to help local women and children?

Well, in that case… maybe just one more french fry.

Now serving inspiration: St. John’s Shelter’s Plates Café & Catering at Depot Park!

Based on models used by other urban-area shelters, Plates Cafe employs formerly homeless women with training skills, and eventually job placement as the final goal. Revenue from the cafe is recycled back into the program.

Truly a community project, the site of the cafe was donated by the owner, with The Home Depot and Lumens, plus more than 300 individuals, stepping up for renovations.

Shuttles to take women to and from work each day are provided by Thunder Valley Casino, and local restaurateurs Bobbin and Patrick Mulvaney have offered to employ program graduates.

On the lunch menu: salads, sandwiches, soups and “stove-top” selections. Look for breakfast to be added in late July, with full catering services available soon.

So go ahead, chow down! It’s for charity.
