Sacramento: The Shady Lady Saloon

Opening Soon: The Shady Lady Saloon!

He's lightning fast at sending late night calls to voicemail, has somehow explained how he ended up with glitter on his face (twice!) and when questioned about those wet boxers in his trunk? His official story was that fell in a puddle on his way to buy you flowers.

Ladies, let's face it. He's shady. But, that's ok because two can play at that game: The Shady Lady Saloon is opening April 9th on R Street!

Part jazz lounge, part 1920's speakeasy, and unlike any other restaurant+bar+lounge in the Sacramento area, the Shady Lady Saloon will be serving up an affordable menu of classic American dishes, live music, and a comfortable & conversation-inducing atmosphere. The best part? Zero attention-diverting plasmas, assuring that he pays attention to you, and not to that LeBron James dunk.

Executive Chef Jason Boggs, along with Chef de Cuisine Kevin Richie, formally from Michael Mina in SF, will be offering a smart lunch menu of soups, salads & sandwiches, along with a happy hour, dinner & late night menu of small plate "comfort food" selections.

Head to the U-shaped bar to browse a huge selection of seasonal & housemade cocktails infusions; handcrafted with an emphasis on using local & fresh ingredients. Or, choose among all your wine & beer faves and mixed drink classics.

Set your pin curls & pick out your best fringe-embellished frock, The Shady Lady Saloon will be opening Thursday, April 9th!

Masullo Pizza in Sacramento

Masullo Pizza Coming to Riverside Blvd in Sacramento!

Amidst the flashy whirlwind of new restaurants to Sacramento, sometimes you crave the romance of good ole' fashion comfort food. One you can count on; one to hold you when you just want to be held.

Enter Masullo Pizza. Owner and former Mustard's Grill pastry chef, Robert Masullo, plans to take us on a trip to Italy with a new Neapolitan-style pizzeria set to debut this summer on Riverside Blvd.

Recession approved prices, and a no fuss menu you won't have to pretend to understand. Menu will change seasonally--just like our handbags.

Individual plate-sized pizzas will be served authentic Neapolitan style, sizzling in wood-burning ovens soaring to temps hotter than Augusts in Sacramento. Toppings will be spread with a light touch; quality over quantity. The "Londra" and "Yerba" seem especially intriguing.

Blank Blank will complete the masterpiece and a noble walnut tree, long time resident of 10th & Richards Blvd, will come back reincarnated as the restaurants' tables and counter tops.

Study their menu online, and wait patiently for their reveal at the end of May. Buon appetito!

RetroLodge In Sacramento

Sacramento: RetroLodge Lands on 11th & H Streets... Retro Lodge
The once dismal downtown corner of 11th and H Streets, home to the Travelodge for the last 40 years, is now rockin' a revived retro shape as Retrolodge gets set to go back in time!

The throw back dream team? Developers Mike Heller, Mark Davis & Randy Boehms, along with RMW Architects (MARRS project) and blankblank interior design team, joined forces and talent to turn this once bordering-on-blight block into a sexy Sacramento corner!

The Palm Springs-circa-1950's project is made up of two separate buildings, Elroy & Astro--a nostalgic play off that crazy futurist cartoon we grew up watching. There will be 50 work/live studios ranging in size from 280 – 632 square feet including common area conference rooms, kitchenettes, and a re-designed interior courtyard--all this, and parking on site!

At street level expect a mix of the usual suspects--restaurants, coffee houses, and a thread of local art and artists...as with the MARRS project, there will be an emphasis on landing diverse retailers, keeping the spot 'alive' at all hours of day and night...

Sure to be the new It office and retail location hotspot, we're told The Retrolodge will be complete by the end of May!

Sacramento: Sheraton Grand To Sell

Sheraton Grand Hotel Given Ok To Sell...

On Tuesday, The Sacramento City Council approved the $130 million dollar sale of the Sheraton Grand Hotel and parking garage on J Street.

Although many have criticized that the City may be rushing into things and should wait out this slow real estate market in hopes of selling for a higher price in the future, the Council members voted 8-1 in favor of selling now.

Two developers, David Taylor and CIM Group plan to pay the $130 million for the hotel and garage and the City stands to make $40-$45 million after all is said and done. In an unusual agreement, the City has also agreed to set aside HALF of their proceeds to help underwrite future Taylor and CIM projects...

A little Sacramento-related background on David Taylor and CIM Group that you can pretend you knew...

*Taylor built the new City Hall expansion at 1201 K Street, the Esquire Plaza and almost completed US Bank Building on Capital Mall.

*Taylor and CIM Group are both partners in the Cosmopolitan, an entertainment, dining and social destination at 10th and K Streets which will include include high-end office space. Renovation of the original 1956 Woolworth Building is underway now and construction is scheduled to be completed by October 2008. According to DowntownSac.org, tenants will include a 200-seat Cosmopolitan Cabaret theater; Cosmo, a new dining concept by local restaurateur Randy Paragary; Socialize, a plush modern ultra lounge; and 10,500 s.f. of private office space within blocks of the State Capitol.

*CIM Group built the Plaza Lofts, a new seven-story loft-style apartment building on 8th and J Streets (near Ceasar Chavez Park)
*In a partnership with CalPERS, CIM controls the former Sac Towers site on Capital Mall, once controlled by developer John Saca.

So where might Taylor and CIM cash in their subsidiaries and develop next? Potential sites include...

The Old Montgomery Ward department store at 9th and J Streets and the lonely lot at 601 Capital Mall (former envisioned site of the Aura Towers)

All I can say is...thank God for these guys! They seem to be two of very few developers that are actually getting projects built in Sacramento despite the depressed market!

What are your thoughts?? Did the City make a good call or jump the gun?

Sacramento Development: 14th and R Street

14th and R Street development in midtown Sacramento is a GO!

It looks like D & S Development Inc. has closed escrow on the one time Wonder Bread bakery building at 1409 R Street, and the rehab of the 95-year-old brick building is underway!

The development is located just down the block from current R Street Corridor inhabitants R15, Bernardo Restaurant, Empire nightclub and Space 07 Salon. Plans for the building include residential loft dwellings (approx 12 units) with street level restaurants and retail.

According to a D&S partner, the lofts will be "true lofts" and they will be "keeping all the brick....the 15-foot ceilings with exposed ducts and beams." It is still undecided as to the pricing of whether or not the lofts will be for sale or lease, but it has been decided that the units will come with parking space and will be built to "condo standards, with energy-saving elements that will qualify for LEED certification."

The plans for the 12,000 square feet street level retail space include.... a "hip & modern" hof brau (rumor has it it will be a traditional hof brau business from the Bay Area) a "sake lounge"/Japanese restaurant, a bistro/restaurant concept and a possible art gallery.

Rumor is that since D&S had 6-8 months to plan, permit and negotiate with prospective tenants prior to securing the property, the lofts could realistically be completed by early 2009 with 3-5 restaurants/retail close to full occupancy permits at that time...

No doubt, an exciting project and WONDERFUL addition to the R Street Corridor...Stay tuned!

Sacramento: Old El Torito New Local Restaurant Venture?

Sacramento Rumor: The old El Torito building to be the site of Tre, a new venture by SRO Inc.

SRO Inc. owners and local restaurateurs Matt & Fred Haines, already own and operate several successful Sacramento area eateries including: 33rd Bistro in East Sacramento, Riverside Clubhouse in Land Park, a trio of Bistro 33's in El Dorado Hills, Davis and Downtown Sacramento, and the newly opened Suzie Burger in midtown!

The proposed Tre site, located on Howe Ave at Hurley, would share a shopping center with Chevy's Fresh Mex and be situated directly across the street from T.G.I. Friday's.

No word on the exact plans or time frames for the venture or if it's a complete 'go', but remodeling efforts seem to be under way...painters and workers have been on site for a few weeks now...

Can't wait to see what develops here...Stay Tuned!

Update: Our rumor was confirmed!

Sacramento: C.C. Myers I-5 Rehab

Sacramento News: C.C. Myers Unveils I5 Rehab Plans!

Commuters take note...On Monday, State highway officials unveiled a bold plan to rehab the decaying "boat section" of Interstate 5 (termed this because of its construction under groundwater level) in downtown Sacramento...

Start to finish time? Only 42 days! How you might ask??!

Enter....C.C. Meyers. After underbidding 6 other contractors and winning the $27 million dollar contract in February, (a Caltrans estimate was in excess of $40M) the company announced yesterday that instead of their projected 114 days (which was well under the 304 days from Caltrans original time projection) they are now estimating the project will take only 42 days of partial freeway closures!

Confused? Understandably so...the company has an un-contractor like history of hitting and beating tight deadlines in the past, such as the Labor Day 2007 replacement of a deck on the Bay Bridge and the well-known replacement of a collapsed portion of the Santa Monica Freeway in 66 days after the Northridge earthquake...more than two months ahead of schedule!

Ok, so since none of us are making any $$ on this (unless you're reading Clint C., call me!) let's get down to business and address why you care and how you'll be affected if you're a frequent I-5'er...

Starting the last week in May, all lanes (roughly between Richard Blvd to Sutterville Rd, including several on and off ramps) in one direction of the freeway will be closed for up to two weeks at a time, followed by a similar closure in the opposite direction.

In short Sacramento? Figure out your I-5 detours before the end of May!

Sacramento: MARRS

Sacramento: There is life on MARRS!

MARRS (Midtown Art Retail & Restaurant Scene) just picked up Sacramento Biz Journal 'Best New Rehab/Renovation of 2007 & Best New Project 2007.' Developer Mike Heller and his team performed a magic act taking a once blah state building, and transforming it into a work of art!

The MARRS development houses an mix of locally owned small businesses (with the exception of Peet's coffee) at its remarkable midtown location.

Check out Azul's (taqueria & tequila bar), Prive Boutique by DV8 (women & men's urban clothing boutique), Soloman Dubnick Gallery (a wonderful addition to the Art Walk), Luigi's Slice (an urban spin off the Stockton Blvd original) and a few still in the making...

And, Rumor is... the owner of 55 degrees has signed on for the corner spot? (20th & K) We are told the space will include a wine bar & lounge featuring urban mini plates, signature cocktails, an extensive wine list, and hip lounge - further adding to midtown's nightlife!

G.V. Hurleys Restaurant and Bar in Sacramento

G.V. Hurley's Restaurant & Bar in Sacramento is finally hiring!

After a few months of delays, it looks like G.V. Hurley's at 2716 J Street in midtown Sacramento will be opening in late March!

Located where the old Radio Shack used to be, the restaurant will join forces with Blue Que, Harlow's, MoMo Lounge, Gianni's Trattoria and Centro Cocina Mexicana, as it positions itself on one of Sacramento's finest midtown nightlife 'corners' at J and 28th Streets.

Why G.V. Hurley's? I actually was asking that myself, since the name isn't that catchy and in my opinion, pretty hard to remember...According to the SacBee, the owners came up with the name by using the names and business interests from the principal partners, all developers - Brian Vail of River West Investments, Steve Goodwin of Township Nine, Pete Geremia of St. Anton Partners and Hurley Construction.

Leave it to a group of men, right ladies?! I would just named it.......Pink.

C. D. Harley's, I mean....G.V. Hurley's was originally slated to open by the end of 2007, but parking issues forced the owners into a decision to demolish the Carrow's (which they also owned) on the corner of 28th and J, to make way for more ample parking space for the new restaurant. Nonetheless, the owners seem optimistic and excited about bringing "regional American food and southern inspired fresh seafood" to a corner known for its more ethnic menu choices.

Plans for the "masculine, yet edgy" restaurant include, a large Paragary rivaling rear courtyard, a circular bar in the center, plenty of outdoor patio seating on J Street and lots of, and I'm quoting, "fire and water themes." (Me like Fire.)

I'm sure a few of their wives intervened to help tone down their caveman design ambitions and I have no doubt that with the men involved with this project, G.V. Hurley's will be wonderful addition to the block! Can't wait to check it out...

If you're interested in working here, check out their Feb 29th job posting on Craigslist for "positions for the grand opening in late March."

Also, check out G.V. Hurley's website and sample menus here.

Sacramento Development: Going Green at 18th and Capital

Sacramento Development News: Going Green at 18th and Capital...

The buzz lately in Sacramento has definitely been of the GREEN variety... and now Julie Young, a former project manager who has worked most recently for Mike Heller, (who developed the new MARRS building and the East End Lofts) has quit managing projects for other developers and has teamed up with midtown architect Ron Vrilakas. (He oversaw the rehab of the 1920's building that Zocalo's now inhabits at 18th and Capital)

Together, they plan to build the first mixed-use LEED certified structure in the City next to Dragonfly's restaurant on 18th and Capital in midtown Sacramento...

Here are the plans for project:

1. The mixed-used project will be located at the empty lot next to Dragonfly's on 18th and Capital.
2. It will be a three-story building with four lofts that sit over street-level retail
3. The ground floor will be retail - possibly a restaurant, boutique and/or upscale market
4. A large courtyard will be constructed in front, setting the project back from the street to make room for the 'green space'.
5. Each upper floor unit will have its own outdoor green space (love this!) including two 700 square foot roof gardens and possibly a pool on the second floor!

The most unique and creative green spin on this development?

Young is planning on providing two fuel-efficient Smart Cars from Neillo to make available to tenants! The cars will be parked in the back alley to eliminate midtown parking hassles.

No decision yet as to if these lofts will be for sale or for lease, but since Young and her development partner will be taking one unit each, there will only be two available...

Hot Italian Restaurant in Sacramento

Hot Italian in Sacramento? Where?!!

Well, not exactly....but almost as exciting for Sacramento... The Hot Italian, a new and the first 'green' pizza and panini restaurant & Italian clothing boutique, is coming to the corner of 16th & Q Streets (former Young's Fireside store) in Midtown Sacramento...

This hot new eatery will be the FIRST LEED-certified restaurant in the City! According to owner Andrea Lepore this chic new eatery will come come equip with energy saving features including solar panels to heat water for the bathrooms and dishwasher, a special composting bin that will digest most kitchen scraps except meat, recycled building materials and plenty of parking for bicycles. Even the paint and stains for the walls will be soy-based! In addition, Lepore also has asked the city to allow her to convert four parking spaces along 16th Street into spaces for 24 motorcycles and scooters.

According to Lepore Hot Italian will be "A culmination of all the things I've loved: Italian food, wine, clothes, and accessories."

And if this wasn't the most cutting edge and coolest project around, Lepore is actually negotiating to land a Vespa scooter dealership (you know the ones Diane Lane rode around in Under the Tuscan Sun), although the deal hasn't been finalized.

According to the artist rendering (above), Young's Fireside building will be a mere dull yellow memory replaced by sleek white laminate from Abet Inc. in Italy, and a sexy black and white mural on the front will depicting a couple on what else...a Vespa scooter.

Wow..and just when were about to give up on Sacramento?! We can't wait for this to open...sources say as early as April Spring 08'??

Green Living in Downtown Sacramento

Green is the New Black in Downtown Sac...

Came across this new project in Sacramento a while back when it was still under construction...located at 9th and F Streets, 9 on F is close to the tracks and sort on the 'skirts of Downtown Sac...

It's an up and coming area and the build-out is really beautiful, but it's not just another 'ole residential development, it really is something new and different and worth talking about...

What's especially unique and cool about this development? It's focus on being energy-efficient and environmentally smart (ok, don't worry...I'm not going to go Gore here, I promise...)

I'll just say that even though we can't all agree on WHY our planet is melting, we can probably all agree that going green in every way we can just makes sense...

9 on F Green Plans:

- Homes are LEED certified (The Leadership of Energy and Environmental Design) and use:
-Energy efficient Geo-Thermal Heating and Cooling Systems
-SMUD "Solar Smart" with built-in solar panels (Alley units)
-Tankless "On Demand" Hot Water units
- WindsorONE Interior and Exterior wood trim
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Floors
- Non-Toxic American Pride Interior Paints

9 on F will be holding an Open House this Saturday Feb 9th, starting at 2pm...can't wait to take a look at these...

Stone Lock Project in Sacramento

I know, first we were all teased with the SacTowers, then the Aura Towers, then talks of a new Arena...so, don't get your
hopes up too much, but the word on the street is that a group of developers are eyeing 200 acres of vacant and undeveloped waterfront land along the Sacramento River, referred to as the Stone Lock District.

According to the City Of West Sacramento website, the Cordish Company was approved to lead the development which is reported as the largest and most successful developer of entertainment districts and concepts in the United States.

The community would feature, "entertainment, restaurants, and park events". (Déjà vu, Déjà vu)

Again, let's not get our hopes up just yet, but these kinds of 'talks' are great for our town and let's hope that eventually one of these projects actually gets built! (Hopefully we won't be too old to enjoy it...)
